How a Custom Piece Is Made

How a Custom Piece Is Made

Brief, CAD, wax, cast, set, polish, inspect, ship — with the decision points marked.

Custom work is a sequence of decisions, and most of the cost is set in the first two. Here is the process with the points where you actually choose something.

1 — The brief

Send a sketch, a photograph, or a link to something you like. Tell us the stone (or send its measurements), the metal, the ring size and the date you need it. If you have no idea what you want, send three rings you like — the common features are the brief.

Decision: stone type and size. This sets the price more than anything else.

2 — Feasibility and quote

We reply within one business day with what will work and what will not: whether the stone is too deep for the setting, whether the band is thick enough to carry it, whether the wedding band will sit flush. The quote breaks out metal, stone, setting labour and shipping.

Decision: approve the quote, or change the spec.

3 — CAD and render

A 3D model is built to the exact stone. You receive renders from three angles, plus dimensions: band width, gallery height, total spread. Revisions are included until the proportions are right. A resin print can be posted on request.

Decision: approve the model. This is the last cheap point to change your mind.

4 — Casting

The model is printed, invested and cast in silver, gold or platinum. Castings are inspected for porosity, then cleaned up and prepared for setting.

5 — Setting

Stones are set under magnification. Pavé and channel work is done stone by stone; tennis lines are set in a jig so the height is consistent. Every stone is probed for movement before the piece moves on.

6 — Polishing and plating

Progressive polishing with ultrasonic cleaning between stages, then rhodium plating on white pieces or a final high polish on yellow and rose.

7 — Inspection and certificate

Final check: size on a mandrel, weight, stone security, surface finish, certificate number matched to the stone. Photographs are taken before boxing.

8 — Shipping

Tracked and insured, 3–10 business days standard or 2–5 expedited. You receive the tracking number by email.

Timings, honestly

CAD: 3–5 business days. Production after approval: 3–5 business days. Shipping: 3–10 business days standard. Total from brief to door is usually two to four weeks, and the variable is how long you spend on revisions — not the workshop.
