Wedding band width: 2 mm, 4 mm, 6 mm or 8 mm?

Width is a comfort decision before it is a style decision. What each width feels like after a year.

Band width is the first thing people notice and the last thing they think about. It changes how the ring feels, how it wears, and whether it looks right next to an engagement ring.

The widths, honestly

WidthCharacterWatch out for
1.8–2 mmDelicate, stacks well, disappears next to a large stoneDistorts under pressure; not for daily manual work
2.5–3 mmThe everyday middle — reads as a wedding band without shoutingNothing, if thickness is at least 1.6 mm
4 mmSubstantial, unisex, good with wider handsFeels tight; size up a quarter
6 mmClassic men's band, comfortable weightSize up half a size; check comfort-fit interior
8 mm+Statement; heavy in the handSize up a full size; consider 1.8–2 mm thickness

Thickness matters as much as width

A 2 mm wide band at 1.2 mm thick will bend and wear thin within a couple of years. The same width at 1.8 mm will hold its shape. Ask for the thickness — most listings only give width because width is what photographs.

Finger size changes the proportion

A 4 mm band on a size 4 finger looks like a 6 mm band on a size 8. If your hands are small, a 2.5–3 mm band already reads substantial; if they are large, anything under 3 mm can look lost.

Comfort fit vs standard

A comfort-fit interior is rounded, so only the middle of the band touches the finger. It feels looser at the same size and is easier to remove. A standard flat interior has more metal in contact and feels tighter — some people prefer that, because the ring does not spin.

Matching an engagement ring

The band should be within about 1 mm of the engagement ring's shoulder width, or deliberately different — 2 mm next to 4 mm looks like a mistake unless the contrast is the point. For a flush fit, the band's height has to clear the engagement ring's gallery. See matching a band to an engagement ring.

Metal and weight

Platinum is denser than gold, so the same width feels heavier and wears longer. 18K gold is softer than 14K; a wide 18K band will show scratches sooner than 14K. Silver is fine for occasional wear and poor for daily wear at 2 mm.

We make bands from 1.8 mm to 8 mm, in silver, gold and platinum, with the gram weight in the quote. Wedding bands →
