How to match a wedding band to an engagement ring

How to match a wedding band to an engagement ring

Flush, curved, chevron or open — the decision is set by the gallery height, not by the width.

Two rings either sit together or they do not, and the deciding factor is the engagement ring's side profile. Width is secondary; the gap is everything.

Measure the gap, not the width

Put the engagement ring on a flat surface and look at it from the side. If the band of the ring is flat all the way to the head, a straight band will sit flush. If the head sits on a raised gallery, there is a gap under it, and a straight band will either push the rings apart or leave a visible space.

Photograph the ring side-on with a ruler in frame. That single photo tells a jeweller more than a paragraph of description.

The four options

  • Straight band — works when the gallery is low or the shoulders are flat. The simplest and cheapest.
  • Curved (contoured) band — bent around the head. The standard solution for a raised gallery; the curve has to match the head's radius.
  • Chevron or V-band — a sharp V that follows a pear, marquise or heart-shaped head. Reads deliberate rather than adapted.
  • Open band — a gap in the band that lets it pass on either side of the head. Good for very large stones, less secure for daily wear.

Height and thickness

The band's height has to clear the gallery, and its thickness has to look right next to the engagement ring. A 4 mm band next to a 2 mm engagement ring looks heavy; a 1.8 mm band next to a 3 mm ring looks mean. The usual rule is within 1 mm, unless the contrast is intentional.

Metal and finish

Match the metal or deliberately contrast it — a yellow band against a white engagement ring is a style decision, not an error. If you match white gold, remember that rhodium plating wears at a different rate on a band than on a ring with stones, so the two can drift in colour over a year.

Engraving

Inside-band engraving up to 24 characters fits on 2.5 mm and wider. On a 2 mm band, a long inscription becomes a single line of tiny text that is hard to read; consider a shorter phrase or a symbol.

Ordering both together

If you are buying the engagement ring and band together, order them in one run. The stones are then matched from the same parcel and the metals from the same alloy batch — and we can model both rings together to confirm the fit before casting either.
